You're Exhausted by More Than the Diagnosis. Online Therapy for Women in California Living with Chronic Illness.

Finding a therapist in California who actually understands chronic illness is not the same as finding one who has a checkbox for it on their intake form. When your body and your mind are both requiring your attention at the same time, you need someone who knows that connection from the inside out, not someone who treats your diagnosis as background information.

Faith Vargas is a Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT) offering telehealth therapy to clients throughout California. Whether you are in San Diego, Los Angeles, Sacramento, or a town in the Central Valley where mental health providers are scarce, you can access care without leaving home.

Faith works specifically at the intersection of physical health and emotional wellbeing. If you have been carrying both a chronic condition and the anxiety, grief, and identity shifts that come with it, this is the work she does.

Why Telehealth in California

California is not one thing. It is an hour on the 101 after an appointment when your nervous system is still processing. It is a two-hour drive from Fresno to the nearest specialist. It is a community small enough that seeing a therapist in person means risking your privacy at the grocery store.

Telehealth removes those specific barriers. No commute through Bay Area traffic. No driving home afterward. No choosing between getting care and getting through your week. And for the many California residents managing chronic illness, no forcing yourself out of the house when your body is not cooperating.

If you are in a rural county, a suburb, or a city where everything is technically available but practically exhausting, telehealth is a real solution, not a second-best option.

Conditions Faith Works With

Chronic illness looks different for every person who lives with it. The emotional experience of managing a body that does not behave predictably, including the anxiety, grief, identity shifts, and relationship strain it creates, is where therapy focuses.

Faith has experience providing emotional support and therapy for clients managing the following conditions:

Lupus, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), Multiple Sclerosis, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), Rheumatoid Arthritis, Endometriosis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome), Lyme Disease, Long Covid, Autoimmune disorders, Chronic pain conditions, Migraine disorders, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Interstitial Cystitis, Diabetes, Cancer and cancer recovery, Ankylosing Spondylitis, and related chronic health conditions affecting daily life and functioning.

[NOTE FOR FAITH: Review this list before the page goes live. Remove any conditions you do not feel equipped to treat. Add any missing conditions you do work with.]

If your condition is not listed here, please reach out. The therapeutic work around chronic illness often applies across diagnoses, because the experience of living with a body that requires constant management has real common threads regardless of the specific condition.

Specialties

Chronic Illness and Anxiety

When a health condition is the source of your anxiety, standard anxiety treatment often misses the mark. The fear of a flare, the grief of a cancelled plan, the hypervigilance that becomes your baseline, these are not irrational thoughts to be corrected. They are understandable responses to real uncertainty. In California, where the cultural pressure to manage everything and still show up fully is particularly intense, that weight compounds. Faith works with the anxiety that grows alongside chronic illness, not around it.

Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy works directly with the body's role in holding stress, tension, and unprocessed emotion. For clients already managing a chronic physical condition, this is not abstract. When you live in a body that requires your constant attention, somatic approaches offer a way to work with that awareness rather than against it. Faith is certified in Somatic Embodiment and Regulation Strategies and integrates this approach with clients throughout California who are ready to explore how the mind-body connection shows up in their daily life in a practical, grounded way.

Premarital Counseling

Entering a marriage while managing a chronic health condition adds layers that standard premarital programs rarely address. Questions about caregiving, pacing, the financial impact of medical costs, and how a condition may change over time deserve space in the conversation. Faith is a certified Prepare and Enrich facilitator and works with couples in California who want to start their marriage with honesty about what their actual life looks like, rather than an idealized version of it.

Couples Counseling

Chronic illness reshapes relationships. One partner becomes the sick one, the other becomes the caretaker, and neither role is what they signed up for. California couples in Los Angeles and the Bay Area often carry the additional weight of high-demand careers, cost-of-living pressure, and very little margin for the relationship itself. Faith is Gottman Level 1 trained and works with couples navigating communication breakdowns, resentment, and the emotional distance that illness and sustained life pressure can create between two people who still want to be close.

Christian Counseling

For clients whose faith is central to how they make sense of suffering, illness, and hope, Faith offers integration of Christian perspective and biblical wisdom into the therapeutic work. This is not assumed or imposed. It is available for those for whom it matters. Faith-based telehealth therapy in California means you can find a therapist who shares your values without being limited to whoever is within driving distance.

Teen Therapy

Teenagers navigating chronic illness or anxiety face their own distinct pressures. Academic expectations in California's competitive school environments, the social difficulty of being sick in a peer group that is not, and the particular challenge of building identity while managing a condition all require a therapist who understands adolescent development and chronic health together. Faith works with teens via telehealth throughout California, in collaboration with parents where appropriate.

A Note from Faith

What to Expect in Your First Session

Your first session is 50 minutes. Before you join the call, you do not need to have your medical history organized, your symptoms summarized, or a clear sense of what you want to work on. You can show up as you are.

Faith will ask questions about what is going on in your life and what you are hoping to get from therapy. You do not have to have a clear answer to the second part. Most people do not when they start.

Sessions happen through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You can join from anywhere in California. You need a private space and a few minutes. That is the complete list of requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is telehealth therapy legal throughout California?

Yes. Telehealth mental health services are fully legal throughout California. Faith is registered with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences and provides therapy to clients across all California counties via a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You do not need to be near a major city or metropolitan area to access care.

Does Faith accept insurance for California clients?

Faith accepts Aetna, Optum, and UnitedHealthcare/UBH for California clients. She also works with clients on a sliding scale basis and accepts out-of-network clients who choose to seek reimbursement through their own insurance plans. Individual sessions are $185 and couples sessions are $200. Sliding scale eligibility and insurance questions can be discussed during the free 15-minute consultation.

What chronic health conditions does Faith work with?

Faith works with clients managing a wide range of chronic and complex health conditions, including lupus, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, PCOS, endometriosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, POTS, Long Covid, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and many others. The therapy focuses on the emotional experience of living with any chronic health condition, including the anxiety, grief, identity shifts, and relationship strain it creates.

How is Faith's approach different from a therapist who does not have personal experience with illness?

Most therapists are trained to address anxiety or depression as separate from the body. If you have a chronic health condition, that separation does not reflect your actual experience. Faith works specifically at the intersection of physical health and emotional wellbeing, using somatic techniques that treat the body as part of the therapeutic work, not as a backdrop to it.

If you have read this far, you already have a sense of whether this feels like the right fit.

Reaching out to a new therapist is harder than it sounds. It takes energy you may not have in excess right now. A 15-minute consultation does not ask you to commit to anything or have everything figured out before you show up. It is a conversation.

If you are in California and you are ready to get some support for the emotional side of what you are managing, you can schedule a free 15-minute consultation using the button below, or send a message through the contact page.

You do not have to have it all together to reach out.
